MOSA, SOSA, VITA: How Are They Related, and What’s the Difference?
MOSA, SOSA, and VITA are organizations that work together to create and define standards in the Open Systems world. But how are they related, and what’s the difference between them?
MOSA
MOSA, or Modular Open Systems Approach, is at the top of the MOSA, SOSA, and VITA chain. MOSA is meant to drive everything to be modular and open source. It also instructs all branches to unify and standardize systems and platforms across the board.
This is the DoD's preferred method of implementing open systems. It is required by United States law and a technical and business strategy made to be an affordable and adaptable system design.
SOSA
Next is SOSA. SOSA stands for Sensor Open Systems Architecture and is a derivative of MOSA. It was developed to define the best standards and practices for Open Modular Sensor Systems, thus providing a framework to design and integrate sensor systems. SOSA provides the specifics for other (VITA) standards to build on and is the main standard followed in the RF/Co-ax world.
VITA
VITA stands for VMEbus International Trade Association. The VITA standards began in the early 1960s with the VMEbus application and have continued to progress throughout the years. The premise of VITA is taking the inside-the-box rats nest of cables and standardizing them to fit a variety of applications. The difference between VITA vs. SOSA and MOSA is that VITA provides the actual standards and groundwork.
